PROCESSES OF PHOTOGRAPHY RANGING FROM BASIC SKILLS TO TECHNIQUES OF SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION.
Abstract
THE CAMERA HAS BECOME AN ESSENTIAL TOOL IN MODERN LAW ENFORCEMENT, BOTH IN THE SMALL COMMUNITY AND THE LARGE CITY. YET PHOTOGRAPHY IS A SUBJECT THAT HAS OFTEN BEEN NEGLECTED IN THE TRAINING OF THE AVERAGE PATROLMAN OR FIREMAN. THIS BOOK IS INTENDED TO INSTRUCT POLICEMEN IN THE BASIC MECHANICS OF DARKROOM WORK AND TO DEMONSTRATE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE A FUNCTIONING PHOTOGRAPHIC LABORATORY, NO MATTER HOW SMALL THE DEPARTMENT OR HOW LIMITED THE FUNDS. THE FIRST SECTION IS DESIGNED TO TEACH THE BASIC SKILLS OF PHOTOGRAPHY, IT EXPLAINS THE HANDLING OF VARIOUS TYPES OF CAMERAS, THE EXPOSURE AND PROCESSING OF FILM, THE PRODUCTION OF SATISFACTORY PRINTS BY CONTACT OR ENLARGEMENT, AND DARKROOM TECHNIQUES. THE OTHER SECTION OF THE BOOK DEALS WITH THE MORE COMPLICATED ASPECTS OF PHOTOGRAPHY WHICH APPLY TO RECORDING SPECIFIC TYPES OF EVIDENCE AND SOLVING CRIMES. THE AUTHOR OUTLINES PROCEDURES FOR PHOTOGRAPHING ACCIDENT AND CRIME SCENES, DOCUMENTS, FINGERPRINTS, ARTICLES OF EVIDENCE, AND IDENTIFICATION PICTURES. INFRARED AND ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION TECHNIQUES FOR RECORDING EVIDENCE WHICH IS NOT VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE ARE EXPLAINED. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN INFORMATION ON FILM SPEED RATES, PHOTOGRAPH SOLUTIONS, CAMERA TERMS AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY. (SNI ABSTRACT)
