A REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (ABA) SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, WHICH WAS FORMED TO MONITOR AND UPDATE THE 17 VOLUMES OF THE ORIGINAL ABA STANDARDS.
Abstract
KEY PROJECTS OF THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE INCLUDED: MONITORING THE STANDARDS TO FIND NEEDED REVISIONS; ASSESSING THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL STANDARDS; COORDINATING THE ABA STANDARDS WITH THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMISSION STANDARDS AND GOALS; WORKING WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SECTION TO ASSIST IN NATIONWIDE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE STANDARDS; AND EVALUATING AREAS OF CONTROVERSY WITHIN THE STANDARDS WITH A VIEW TO RECOMMENDING REFINEMENTS. SPECIAL ATTENTION HAS BEEN GIVEN TO UPDATING THE STANDARDS AND IN REVIEWING THE NEED FOR NEW STANDARDS. AMONG THE AREAS FOR WHICH STANDARDS ARE PLANNED ARE THE GRAND JURY, THE PRELIMINARY HEARING, PROCEDURES RELATING TO MENTALLY DISABLED OFFENDERS, PRETRIAL RELEASE AND DIVERSION, DOUBLE JEOPARDY AND COLLATERAL ESTOPPEL, ARREST AND CONVICTION RECORDS, AND CORRECTIONS.
