A STATISTICAL AND NARRATIVE REPORT CONTAINING A SUMMATION OF ARRESTS MADE IN 1973 AND THE FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF THE 'OFFENSES KNOWN TO POLICE' DATA SYSTEM WHICH WAS INSTITUTED IN MONTANA IN 1973.
Abstract
STATEWIDE REPORTING OF OFFENSES KNOWN TO THE POLICE BEGAN JANUARY 1, 1973. THE SYSTEM IS SIMILAR TO THE FBI UNIFORM CRIME REPORT BUT MORE COMPLETE IN THE NUMBER OF AGENCIES REPORTING (124 COMPARED TO AN ESTIMATED 80 WHICH REPORT TO THE FBI). THE OFFENSES REPORTED INCLUDE HOMICIDE, FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY, MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT, ARSON, FORGERY, FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, STOLEN PROPERTY, VANDALISM, WEAPONS, VICE, SEX OFFENSES, NARCOTICS OFFENSES, AND GAMBLING. DATA ON THE AMOUNT AND TIME OF ARREST AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OFFENDER WERE COMPILED FROM THE REPORTS OF 55 COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENTS, 70 POLICE DEPARTMENTS, AND 6 TRIBAL AGENCIES. THE INFORMATION PROVIDED INCLUDES FELONY AND MISDEMEANOR ARREST TRENDS, DRUG ARRESTS, JUVENILE AND ADULT ARRESTS FOR CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS AND PROPERTY, AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS ARRESTED.
