SURVEY MADE BY THE REHABILITATION RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF 22 AGENCIES IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, ALABAMA.
Abstract
EACH AGENCY WAS QUESTIONED ABOUT ITS RANGE OF SERVICES, ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS, WHETHER IT PROVIDED SERVICES FOR OFFENDERS OR EX-OFFENDERS, AND WHETHER FAMILIES OF EACH WERE CONSIDERED. AGENCIES INCLUDED PAROLE, PROBATION, LAW ENFORCEMENT, GENERAL WELFARE, FAMILY AND CHILD WELFARE, LOW-RENT HOUSING, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, EMPLOYMENT, REHABILITATION, AND OTHERS. ONE POINT EMPHASIZED IN THE FINDINGS WAS THAT ONLY FOUR AGENCIES KNEW WHETHER OR NOT THEY SERVICED OFFENDERS OR EX-OFFENDERS SINCE THE OTHER AGENCY QUESTIONNAIRES DID NOT INCLUDE SUCH QUESTIONS. THE COMMITTEE CONCLUDED THAT MANY MORE COMMUNITY RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE THAN ARE KNOWN TO OFFENDERS AND SUGGESTED THAT A BROCHURE BE PREPARED DESCRIBING THE SERVICES AVAILABLE, THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS, AND HOW TO GO ABOUT OBTAINING THESE SERVICES. THE COMMITTEE ALSO FELT THAT GREATER PUBLIC SUPPORT MIGHT BE GAINED THROUGH TALKS GIVEN BEFORE COMMUNITY GROUPS. (SNI ABSTRACT)
