This volume focuses on the role of morality and ethical codes in the prevention of corporate crime.
Abstract
The first article argues that the moral concept of integrity also applies to the fulfillment of professional responsibility while the second article maintains that--rather than following a predetermined code--companies must set good examples for public conduct in their business practices. Next, the twelve dilemmas companies face when developing an ethical code are described. The fourth article surveys the characteristics and application of ethical codes in 35 Dutch companies; it was found that, even when such codes exist, they are not used to prevent crime. In the following article, voluntary criminal audits conducted by independent trained researchers are introduced as important deterrents to business crime. The sixth article reports on international experiences with increased scrutiny of corporate governance and internal control, while the final article argues that lawyers represent the business interests of their clients rather than the ideals of their profession.
