Abstract
LEGAL PRINCIPLES AND THE MORE SERIOUS CRIMES ARE COVERED BRIEFLY. MORE PROMINENCE IS GIVEN TO THE MANY ACTS OF PARLIAMENT AND STATUTORY ORDERS AND REGULATIONS WHICH THE POLICE SHOULD KNOW. THE FIRST PART DEALS WITH LEGAL PRINCIPLES, PROCEDURE, AND EVIDENCE, WITH CHAPTERS COVERING CRIME, CRIMINALS, ARREST, COURTS OF JUSTICE, PROCEDURE, RECORD OF EVIDENCE, AND EVIDENCE. IN PART 2, OFFENSES AGAINST PERSONS ARE DETAILED, WITH CHAPTERS ON ASSAULT, HOMICIDE, OFFENSES AGAINST FEMALES, INDECENCY, AND LAWS GOVERNING CHILDREN AND PERSONS UNDER 21. OFFENSES IN CONNECTION WITH PROPERTY CONSTITUTE THE THIRD PART; THESE INCLUDE BURGLARY, THEFT, CRIMINAL DAMAGE, COINAGE, FORGERY, PROPERTY, AND POACHING. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY TREATMENT OF OFFENSES AFFECTING THE COMMUNITY IN GENERAL INCLUDING OFFENSES AGAINST THE STATE AND RELIGION, PUBLIC JUSTICE OFFENSES, PUBLIC ORDER, AND CONSPIRACY AND DEFAMATION. THE NEXT SECTION COVERS TRAFFIC LAW OFFENSES, AND A FINAL SECTION COVERS SUCH TOPICS AS VAGRANCY, PREVENTION OF CRIME, EXPLOSIVES, FIREARMS, BETTING AND GAMING, PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT, LIQUOR LICENSING LAWS, AND PUBLIC HEALTH. THE HANDBOOK CONTAINS A LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS, SIX APPENDIXES DETAILING VARIOUS REGULATIONS, SEVERAL TABLES, AND AN INDEX. THIS EDITION UPDATES PREVIOUS ONES BY INCLUDING LEGISLATION ENACTED FROM 1973 TO 1975.
