This article identifies and ranks the 22 most-cited scholars in 16 introductory criminal justice textbooks published from 1989 to 1993.
Abstract
Although numerous citation analysis studies have examined the most-cited scholars in many different types of criminology and criminal justice publications, no study has ever examined who the most-cited scholars are in criminal justice textbooks. This article extends recent citation analysis studies by identifying and ranking the 22 most-cited scholars in 16 introductory criminal justice textbooks published from 1989 to 1993. The list of the most-cited scholars in criminal justice textbooks is then compared to similar lists of the most-cited scholars in criminal justice journals and criminology textbooks. Most of the scholars extensively cited in recent criminal justice textbooks are well known applied researchers who have specialized in studying one criminal justice subsystem (either law enforcement, the courts and criminal law or corrections). Most of the scholars extensively cited in recent criminology textbooks are academic researchers who have made important theoretical or empirical contributions to the analysis of crime. The most-cited scholars in recent criminal justice journals appear to represent a mixture of applied and academic researchers. Tables, notes, references, appendix
