This manual describes a five-session program of motivational enhancement therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for adolescent cannabis users.
Abstract
The manual is designed to help train substance abuse treatment counselors to conduct a five-session treatment intervention for adolescents with cannabis use disorders presenting for outpatient treatment. The intervention targets adolescents between ages 12 and 18 with problems related to marijuana use as indicated by meeting criteria for cannabis abuse or dependence; experiencing emotional, physical, legal, social, or academic problems associated with marijuana use; or using marijuana at least weekly for 3 months. The program combines two sessions of motivational enhancement therapy provided individually and three sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy provided in a group setting. The program is referred to as MET/CBT5. The manual reviews the scope, effects, and patterns of the marijuana problem; provides a brief overview of the Cannabis Youth Treatment project for which the manual was developed; covers the scientific basis for this intervention; and describes step-by-step procedures for actually implementing this treatment protocol.
