This is an overview of vehicle theft in South Australia during 1997.
Abstract
The report is intended as a reference tool for researchers and policy advisers, providing statistics from which trends can be monitored and prevention initiatives evaluated. The report: (1) reviews general vehicle theft and recovery trends in South Australia during the last 27 years and compares recent statistics with those from across the country; (2) analyzes factors, including temporal and spatial characteristics, associated with thefts and recoveries; (3) analyzes vehicle characteristics, along with factors such as means of entry, type of damage sustained and estimated value of the vehicle; (4) examines insurance data such as estimates of insurers' costs cross-tabulated by type of cover, condition of the vehicle at recovery, type of salvage, make, year of manufacture, and claims suspected of being fraudulent; (5) profiles apprehended offenders; and (6) analyzes the responses of the criminal justice system to alleged offenders.
