RESULTS OF A 1974 TWO-MONTH NATIONWIDE SURVEY ON CHARACTERISTICS OF MOTOR VEHICLE THEFTS, IN WHICH MORE THAN 5,900 LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES REPRESENTING 69 PERCENT OF THE U.S. POPULATION PARTICIPATED.
Abstract
AMONG THE AREAS COVERED IN THE QUESTIONNAIRE ARE THEFT BY TYPE AND YEAR OF MOTOR VEHICLES; TIME AND PLACE OF THEFT; CONDITION OF VEHICLE IGNITION AT TIME OF THEFT; THE PURPOSE OF THE THEFT; PERSONS ARRESTED FOR VEHICLE THEFT; AND RECOVERY OF STOLEN VEHICLES. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT IS LARGELY AN URBAN PROBLEM. THEFTS OCCURRED MOST FREQUENTLY BETWEEN 6 P.M. AND 6 A.M., AND OVER HALF THE THEFTS OCCURRED FROM PRIVATE RESIDENCES OR STREETS IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT ALTHOUGH LATE MODEL CARS ARE MORE DESIRABLE TO POSSESS, THEY ARE BEING STOLEN LESS FREQUENTLY THAN OLDER CARS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
