The number of offenses dealt with by fixed penalty notices issued by the police, including traffic wardens, totaled 3.5 million. In addition, 1.7 million penalty charge notices were issued by local authority parking attendants in Greater London. The average fine in magistrate courts for motoring offenses was 123 pounds, an increase of 7 percent over 1993. Among findings of guilt in all courts for causing death or bodily harm, 73 percent resulted in custodial sentences. Sixty percent of disqualifications for driving after consuming alcohol or drugs were for more than 1 year. Automatic cameras provided evidence for 156,000 offenses dealt with in 1994; 74 percent of these were speeding offenses. 16 notes, 19 tables, and 2 figures
