Abstract
THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE NUMBER OF MOVES DURING 1972 OF VARIOUS TYPES - (1) ENTRANCES INTO THE CUSTODY OF THE DEPARTMENT BY COURT COMMITMENT OR RETURN AS A PAROLE VIOLATOR, AND EXITS FROM ITS CUSTODY BY PAROLE, DISCHARGE OR EXPIRATION, (2) TRANSFERS AMONG INSTITUTIONS, (3) TRANSFERS TO AND FROM OTHER JURISDICTIONS ON THE COUNTY AND FEDERAL LEVELS AND IN OTHER STATES, (4) SHORT-TERM MOVES OUT OF THE SYSTEM AND BACK IN FOR SUCH REASONS AS GOING TO COURT OR TO A HOSPITAL, AND (5) OTHER MISCELLANEOUS MOVES. INCLUDED ARE ALL MOVES INTO AND OUT OF MASSACHUSETTS CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WITH TWO EXCEPTIONS - FURLOUGHS AND ROUTINE TRIPS AWAY FROM THE INSTITUTION LASTING LESS THAN THAN A DAY. THIS REPORT ALSO PRESENTS BASIC FACTS ABOUT THE CHANGES IN THE INSTITUTIONAL POPULATIONS DURING 1972. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
