Abstract
DURING 1973 THE POPULATION OF THE MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS (DOC) INSTITUTIONS INCREASED BY FIVE PER CENT. THE TOTAL POPULATION OF THE MINIMUM SECURITY FACILITIES INCREASED BY 27 PER CENT. THE PRIME FACTOR IN THE INCREASE IN DOC POPULATION WAS THE DROP IN THE NUMBER OF PAROLES AND IN THE NUMBER OF PAROLES AND OF DISCHARGES/EXPIRATIONS. THE SOURCE OF DATA FOR THIS REPORT IS THE ADMISSION/RELEASE SHEETS COMPLETED BY EACH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION. SOME DATA HAS ALSO BEEN OBTAINED FROM THE WEEKLY COUNT SHEETS PREPARED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. THE CORE OF THIS REPORT CONSISTS OF 13 TABLES OF DATA. THE REPORT SUMMARY GIVES A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE POPULATION CHANGES FOR EACH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION. THE ADMISSION AND RELEASE CATEGORIES USED IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINED IN THE APPENDIX. A COMPARISON OF 1972 AND 1973 MOVEMENT FIGURES, BY INSTITUTION, IS ALSO INCLUDED IN CHART FORM.
