Shock incarceration is a short term punishment tactic that provides moral clarity.
Abstract
Due to prison overcrowding and the overwhelming drug problem, new options are being sought in corrections that are cost-effective, protect the public, and change the behavior of the offender. One such option is shock incarceration, which involves enhanced discipline and seems to fulfill the public's need to see offenders punished. Shock incarceration can provide a diverse group of programs: hard work; educational programs; regular community supervision; or intensive supervision in the community. Shock incarceration has also been proposed as a method of handling the expected large numbers of drug offenders. The shorter period of time these offenders spend in prison saves money, and hopefully will be an effective deterrent from continuing their criminal careers. More research is needed to determine the effectiveness of these programs.
