This article describes efforts in two English cities to coordinate policing functions in public housing projects between local law enforcement and the housing authorities.
Abstract
The two initiatives described here, one in Hackney, London, and the other in Gateshead, represent developments in multiagency cooperations. First, they demonstrate the benefits of closer cooperation on a day-to-day operational basis, rather than through timetabled monthly interagency meetings. Second, the two parties' actions (civil and criminal) were not carried out concurrently, but became mutually supportive and intertwined. The policing of public housing projects has been identified as a priority in the national British police crime prevention program.
