THE USEFULNESS OF INFORMANTS CAN BE INCREASED AND THEIR IDENTITY PROTECTED IF RECORDS ARE KEPT USING CODE OR NUMERICAL DESIGNATIONS.
Abstract
THE RELIABILITY OF AN INFORMANT MUST BE A MATTER OF RECORD TO THE AGENCY USING HIS INFORMATION AS WELL AS TO HIS CONTACT. CODE NAMES PROVIDE THAT RECORD AND PROTECT THE CONFIDENTIAL RELATIONSHIP OF OFFICER AND INFORMANT. TO INSURE CONTINUITY AND PROVIDE FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS THE TRUE IDENTITY OF THE INFORMANT SHOULD BE KNOWN TO HIS CONTACT AND AN ALTERNATE TRUSTED BY BOTH.
