This article examined the alliance developing between Israel and India through the mutual threat of Islamic militancy.
Abstract
Israel has increased its focus on events in Central Asia, as far as Indonesia, in its attempt to counteract Islamic fundamentalism perceived as a major threat. Israeli intelligence agencies have been intensifying their relations with India's intelligence in a fight against Islamic militants. Israel has shown significant involvement in helping New Delhi combat militants in the disputed province of Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority State that is at the center of the conflict with Pakistan. Israel has placed several teams in Kashmir, training Indian counter-insurgency forces to fight. In addition, there is a convergence of U.S. and Israeli strategic interests where India is concerned. The growing intelligence partnership between Israel and India is seen as part of a wider relationship in the defense field. Recently, there have been written understandings between India and Israel opening the door to several joint projects involving technology transfer to India.
