Abstract
Most of the information refers to adult corrections and covers the period from April 1, 1998, to March 1999. The booklet first describes the structure and operations of Federal corrections, followed by a question-and-answer format that covers 44 items associated with Federal corrections. Organizational questions pertain to corrections legislation, the mission of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), and the mission of the National Parole Board. Among the statistical matters addressed are the total population of Canada, the number of people in Canada with a criminal record, the average count of adults imprisoned in Canada, the number of people convicted of a crime who received a Federal sentence, and the rate of imprisonment. Other data presented cover the total expenditures of the CSC, the number of people employed by CSC, total expenditures for the National Parole Board, the average annual cost of incarcerating an inmate, the average annual cost of supervising an offender, the number of correctional facilities and parole offices, and the number of correctional facilities by security level and region. Other data address data on inmates and their characteristics and issues pertinent to the operation of Federal correctional facilities and parole.
