Abstract
THE TECHNIQUE USED FOR DATA GATHERING AND ANALYSIS WAS THE CRIME ANALYSIS -- PROJECT EVALUATION RESEARCH TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED BY THE SANTA CLARA CRIMINAL JUSTICE PILOT PROGRAM. THIS APPROACH IS BASED ON THE CODING OF KEY DATA ELEMENTS OBTAINED FROM POLICE OFFENSE REPORTS AND A CROSS-SORTING OF CODED DATA INTO CATEGORIES. TOTALS ARE TABULATED AND ANALYZED FOR PATTERNS, SIMILARITIES, OR UNUSUAL FREQUENCIES. DATA WAS GATHERED ON SPECIFIC CRIMES IN THE FOLLOWING MAJOR CATEGORIES: CRIMES OF VIOLENCE (ROBBERY, ASSAULT, RAPE, AND INVOLUNTARY HOMICIDE); PROPERTY CRIMES (BURGLARY, GRAND LARCENY--AUTO, AND LARCENY); AND CRIMES INVOLVING PROPERTY LOSS. ROBBERY IS REPORTED ACCORDING TO OCCURRENCE BY MONTH, DAY OF EVENT, HOUR OF EVENT, LOCATION, TYPE OF WEAPON, VIOLENCE TOWARDS VICTIM, DOLLAR LOSS, PROPERTY TARGET, AND CASE STATUS. MONTH, DAY OF THE WEEK, HOUR OF THE EVENT, AND LOCATION ARE REPORTED FOR AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, TOGETHER WITH TYPE OF WEAPON, VICTIM/OFFENDER RELATIONSHIP, VICTIM/OFFENDER ETHNIC GROUP, AND CASE STATUS. DATA ON TWO RAPES AND ONE INVOLUNTARY HOMICIDE OCCURRING DURING 1975 ARE REPORTED. DATA GATHERED ON BURGLARY REPORT INCIDENTS BY MONTH AND WEEK, LOCATION, TYPE OF ENTRY, DOLLAR LOSS, PROPERTY TARGETS, DISCOVERER, CHARACTERISTICS OF SUSPECT AS GIVEN BY VICTIMS, AND CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY. IN REPORTING ON GRAND LARCENY--AUTO, THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS PROVIDED: NUMBER OF OFFENSES BY WEEK, DAY, AND DAY-NIGHT SPAN; LOCATION OF VEHICLES; TYPE OF ENTRY; METHOD OF ENTRY; DOLLAR LOSS; TYPES OF VEHICLES; VEHICLES RECOVERED; AND APPREHENSION OF OFFENDERS. LARCENY DATA REPORT NUMBER OF OFFENSES ON A MONTHLY, WEEKLY, DAILY, AND DAY-NIGHT SPAN BASIS, TOGETHER WITH INFORMATION ON TYPE OF PREMISE, DOLLAR LOSS, PROPERTY TARGETS, AND CLEARANCES, CRIMES INVOLVING PROPERTY LOSS SHOW INFORMATION ON REPORTED LOSS, VALUE OF RECOVERY, AND NET LOSS. ALL DATA ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM. (RCB)
