FACTORS WHICH AFFECT THE ACQUISITION AND USE OF DRUG DETECTING DOGS FOR POLICE OPERATIONS.
Abstract
THE MILITARY HAS EXTENSIVELY USED DOGS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES BECAUSE CANINES HAVE A PHENOMENAL ABILITY TO DETECT SCENTS AND DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN THEM. THE CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF NARCOTICS DETECTING DOGS ARE EXPLORED. CRITERIA FOR SELECTING DOGS AND THEIR HANDLERS ARE SUGGESTED. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS WHICH AFFECT THE UTILIZATION OF DOG TEAMS, I.E., WARRANT REQUIREMENTS AND PROBABLE CAUSE, ARE ANALYZED.
