Abstract
Following a historical examination of drug consumption, an overview of the general hazards of drug use and the major drug categories and their classification (schedules) are described. Information on each of the major drugs of abuse, including its production, effects, and uses is provided. In addition to such drugs as cocaine, marijuana, and heroin, designer drugs and pharmaceutical drugs are included. Major foreign sources of drugs are discussed, and the large profit margins associated with international drug trafficking are noted. Profiles are next provided of the narcotics agent, the drug dealer, and the informer. The tools and roles of drug law enforcement are reviewed, and fundamentals of drug investigation are discussed. Domestic drug sources, methods of drug smuggling, the role of organized crime, and drug-related crimes also are examined. Finally, drugs in the workplace, drug testing, and treatment and prevention are discussed. Illustrations and index.
