This report describes availability, consumption, sources of production, and trafficking trends for marijuana, cocaine, dangerous drugs such as depressants and hallucinogens, and opiates, as well as drug money laundering activity and near-term projections on use.
Abstract
Chapters on each drug group provide information on consumption from 1981-1984, adverse health consequences, market price, and developments in foreign source countries. Smuggling patterns and control efforts for cocaine and opiates are discussed. Also reviewed are methods used to launder drug money and cooperative international efforts to combat illicit drug traffic. According to the report's projections, marijuana consumption trends are not expected to change, with the decline in use among young people continuing. Cocaine availability will remain at high levels, although the number of users is expected to stabilize. While dangerous drug use should remain unchanged from 1984, increased use of methamphetamine, PCP, and codeine combinations is anticipated. Heroin use should not change significantly, but production might decrease. Graphs and tables.
