THIS LARGELY STATISTICAL DOCUMENT OUTLINES THE WORK OF THE INTAKE, INVESTIGATIONS, SUPERVISION, AND SPECIAL SERVICES OFFICES OF THE ADULT AND FAMILY COURT DIVISIONS OF THE NASSAU COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
A NARRATIVE SECTION DESCRIBES ADMINISTRATION, BUDGET CONTROL PROCEDURES, THE RECRUITING AND HIRING OF PERSONNEL, PUBLIC INFORMATION EFFORTS, AND THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DIVISION. THE COMMUNITY SERVICES PROGRAM IS PREVENTIVE IN NATURE. IT INCLUDES A VARIETY OF SOCIAL, RECREATIONAL, AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED AT WALK-IN CENTERS LOCATED IN HEMPSTEAD AND FREEPORT. THE CENTERS ARE STAFFED BY PROFESSIONAL AND PARAPROFESSIONAL WORKERS AND ARE OPEN WEEKDAYS, WITH EVENING HOURS FOR REGULAR PROBATION REPORTS, PLUS WEEKEND ACTIVITIES DURING THE SUMMER. A YOUTH COUNSELING PROGRAM AND EMPLOYMENT COUNSELING AND AND REFERRAL ARE ALSO PROVIDED. IN 1977 THERE WERE 84 TRAINED VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTING ABOUT 5,000 HOURS TO PROBATION WORK. THE AMERICAN RED CROSS STAFFS A NURSERY IN THE FAMILY COURT BUILDING, AND THE COUNCIL OF CURCHES MAINTAINS A PART-TIME CHAPLAIN FOR INTAKE CLIENTS. A VARIETY OF OTHER COMMUNITY RESOURCES ARE TAPPED FOR BOTH ADULT AND JUVENILE OFFENDERS. THE STATISTICAL SECTION INCLUDES BUDGETS AND COMPARATIVE SUMMARIES FOR EACH DIVISION, PLUS ORGANIZATION CHART.
