AN EVALUATION OF A PROJECT TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF SERVICES AVAILABLE TO THE OFFENDER POPULATION AND TO MAKE THESE SERVICES MORE EFFECTIVE THROUGH INTERACTION BETWEEN AIDES AND PROBATIONERS.
Abstract
THE SELECTION CRITERIA AND DUTIES OF THE PROBATION AIDES ARE DESCRIBED. GENERALLY, THE AIDES WERE CHOSEN FROM SIMILAR SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS AS THE MAJORITY OF OFFENDERS AND THEY HAD EITHER NO PREVIOUS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE LAW, WERE FORMER PROBATIONERS OR WERE CURRENTLY ON PROBATION. THE EVALUATORS DEVELOPED A QUESTIONNAIRE THAT WAS DESIGNED TO EVALUATE THE ATTITUDES OF INDIVIDUALS FAMILIAR WITH THE PROGRAM, INCLUDING AIDES AND OFFICERS. THE DEMOGRAPHIC AND SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS OF BOTH AIDES AND OFFICERS ARE PRESENTED. THE PROJECT DESIGN AND ADMINISTRATION IS DISCUSSED INCLUDING SELECTION AND TRAINING PROCEDURES. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROGRAM IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THE THREE DEPARTMENTAL DIVISIONS TO WHICH AIDES WERE ASSIGNED ADULT SUPERVISION, NARCOTICS, AND FAMILY. A COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS IS DETAILED.
