Abstract

This fact sheet describes the origins, focus, alert activation criteria, and additional resources regarding the National Ashanti Alert Network. Named for Ashanti Billie, a 19-year-old woman who disappeared in Virginia and whose body was discovered after two weeks in North Carolina, the Ashanti Alert Act of 2018 was signed into law to authorize the establishment of a national communications network that facilitates regional and local search efforts for missing persons who fall outside the scope of other missing person alerts, especially among states, territories, and tribes. The fact sheet provides guidance on the implementation of an Ashanti Alert Plan, and includes criteria for Ashanti Alert activation, which focus on three key areas: individuals older than 17 years; missing adults with special needs or circumstances; and missing adults who are endangered or have been abducted or kidnapped. The document also provides a list of additional resources and links for more information.
