THIS ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1977-1978 OF BRITAIN'S NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE CARE AND RESETTLEMENT OF OFFENDERS (NACRO) HIGHLIGHTS THE MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS DURING THE YEAR OF THIS VOLUNTARY ORGANIZATION.
Abstract
ALONG WITH NACRO'S BASIC TASKS OF EVERYDAY ADMINISTRATION, PROVIDING INFORMATION TO INQUIRERS, ADVISING ON PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, AND BECOMING INVOLVED IN GENERAL ISSUES RELATING TO THE VOLUNTEERISM, THE ORGANIZATION MADE IMPORTANT STRIDES IN SEVERAL SECTORS SUCH AS HOUSING AND PILOT ACCOMODATION. AMONG FACILITIES ARE THE 134 PROJECT IN LONDON (SUPPORTIVE SHORT-STAY ACCOMMODATION FOR HOMELESS MEN); TALBOT ROAD HOUSE, MANCHESTER (SPECIALIST ACCOMMODATION FOR FEMALE OFFENDERS); STOPOVER HOUSE, LIVERPOOL (SHORT-STAY ACCOMMODATION FOR HOMELESS YOUNG PEOPLE) AND LANCE, MANCHESTER (ACCOMMODATIONS FACILITIES FOR SINGLE, HOMELESS PEOPLE). AMONG THE EMPLOYMENT PROJECTS OF NACRO WERE THE ONWARD WORKSHOPS PROJECT IN MANCHESTER--A REHABILITATION WORKSHOP TAKING GROUPS OF PEOPLE WITH EMPLOYMENT DIFFICULTIES AS WELL AS OFFENDERS AND EX-OFFENDERS, AND PROVIDING PAID EMPLOYMENT FOR 32 WORKERS AND 8 SUPERVISORS. TWO FURTHER WORKSHOPS WERE ESTABLISHED IN LIVERPOOL AND WOLVERHAMPTON, PROVIDING EMPLOYMENT FOR 34 MEN. EDUCATION NEEDS OF OFFENDERS WERE MET WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN EDUCATION ADVISORY SERVICE IN MANCHESTER; AN EDUCATION PROJECT IN SWINDON WHICH PROVIDES LITERACY TUITION FOR PROBATION CLIENTS; AND THE CAMBRIDGE EDUCATION PROJECT WHICH HAS ASSISTED WITH EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF INQUIRERS WISHING TO OBTAIN FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION. DAY CARE CENTERS IN MANCHESTER AND LIVERPOOL WERE IMPROVED AND BY THE END OF THE YEAR CONSULTANT GROUPS HAD BEEN SET UP IN AVON, DEVON, AND KENT TO EXPLORE THE FUTURE OF AFTER-CARE ACCOMMODATION. FURTHER ACTIVITIES AND SECTIONS ON NACRO'S STAFF MEMBERS, PROJECTS, AND PUBLICATIONS, AS WELL AS A COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL REPORT, ARE PRESENTED. (MJW)
