Data were collected by State child protective services agencies and recorded on the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) Summary Data Component (SDC) Form for 1991. The data, collected between August and October 1992, were used to develop and refine the approach to collecting national information on child maltreatment.
Abstract
The 1991 SDC is the second cycle of what is planned to be an annual event; this report is a working document that provides a basis for developing commentary from States and national experts to create the content and format for future reports. Following a background section describing the history of the design and development of NCANDS, the report discusses some of the issues, problems, and major findings that emerged in the implementation of this data collection exercise. The national child abuse and neglect data tables aggregate information reported by States in 1991. The report presents the main findings of various analyses of the State data. Finally, State comments, which should be reviewed before any State-to-State comparisons are made, explain the data in the national data tables. 14 figures and 4 appendixes
