This volumes describes the study, sampling, data collection, file structure, variables, and coding for the dataset of the National Crime Surveys conducted since 1975.
Abstract
The national sample consisted of about 72,000 sample units chosen in a stratified multistage cluster sample of households throughout the Nation. The survey was designed to develop detailed information about the victims and consequences of crime, to estimate the numbers and types of crimes not reported to police, and to provide uniform measures of selected types of crimes to permit reliable comparisons over time and among areas. The surveys provided measures for rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
