This is the computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) manual for field representatives who conduct the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which is the only ongoing national program that provides information on how much crime occurs in the United States, who is victimized by that crime, and the impact crime has on its victims.
Abstract
This manual has four major sections. Part A, "The National Crime Victimization Survey and You," consists of an overview of the NCVS, the nature of a NCVS interview, general NCVS procedures, the job duties and performance standards for an interviewer, a personal visit compared to a telephone interview, non-interviews, and interviewing materials. Part B, "The National Crime Victimization Survey CAPI Instrument," contains an overview of the NCVS instrument and the details of the various sections of the NCVS instrument. Part C, "Survey Concepts," addresses basic NCVS concepts, screening for crimes, and reporting crime incidents. Part D, "NCVS Case Management and Contact History Instrument," provides guidance on case management and describes the features and uses of the Person Level Contact History Instrument (pCHI),
