AN EVALUATION OF THE NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION CONSORTIUM FOCUSES ON QUESTIONS RAISED, THE STATE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION, THE NATIONAL MANPOWER DOCTORATE.
Abstract
IN ADDITION TO THE VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES OUTLINED IN THE OTHER FOUR VOLUMES OF THE CONSORTIUM REPORT, A NUMBER OF CONFERENCES AND STUDIES FUNDED BY THIS LEAA PROJECT ADDED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FIELD OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION. THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND CONDUCTED AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION DURING JULY 1976, A JOINT EFFORT WITH THE OTHER SIX CONSORTIUM INSTITUTIONS. A NUMBER OF CRIMINOLOGISTS ATTENDED ALONG WITH AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVES OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. THE CONFERENCE CONFIRMED THE IMPRESSION THAT CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDIES REPRESENT AN AMERICAN INVENTION, AS FEW PARALLEL EFFORTS ARE FOUND IN OTHER NATIONS. INSTEAD, FOREIGN SCHOLARS SHOW MORE SIMILARITY TO TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC CRIMINOLOGISTS THAN TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATORS. SECOND, FOREIGN CRIMINOLOGICAL WORK DIFFERS RATHER MARKEDLY FROM AMERICAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACTIVITES IN THAT THE FOREIGN WORK TENDS TO BE ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY UNIVERSITY-BASED, WHILE AMERICAN CRIMINOLOGY IS STRONGLY LINKED TO PRACTICAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE OPERATIONS. TWO OF THE MAJOR OUTGROWTHS OF THE CONSORTIUM WERE THE NATIONAL MANPOWER STUDY AND THE CONFERENCE ON KEY ISSUES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION. (EACH OF THESE TWO PROJECTS IS COVERED IN A SEPARATE VOLUME OF THE FOUR BASIC REPORTS; BRIEF SUMMARIES ARE GIVEN IN THIS EVALUATION.) OTHER PRODUCTS OF THE 3-YEAR CONSORTIUM PROJECT WERE: A SEPARATE CONTRACT TO PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY FOR BASIC RESEARCH ON JUVENILE DIVERSION; ADVISORY AND RESEARCH RELATIONSHIPS WITH REGIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES ENTERED INTO BY STAFF AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AND ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, AND PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY; AND INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PROJECTS, WHICH ARE BRIEFLY SUMMARIZED. THESE CONFERENCES, PAPERS, RESEARCH PROJECTS, AND COMPILATIONS OF BIBLIOGRAPHIES HELPED TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON PARTICULAR PROBLEMS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD AND HAVE LED TO CRITICAL THINKING ABOUT THE PROBLEMS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION AND ITS RELATIONSHIPS TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
