Abstract
Following an annotated listing of the sources for the data presented in the tables, the data tables are presented under the following general categories: “Drug Use” (21 tables); “Drug Use Consequences” (14 tables); “Drug Treatment” (3 tables); “Drug User Expenditures and Availability” (18 tables); and “State, Local, and International Data” (23 tables). Tables on “Drug Use” address such topics as the estimated number of users of selected illegal drugs for 1979-2001; drug use by current employment status, 1995-2001; use of selected drugs by grade level (8-12); and substance use among probationer, and State and Federal prison inmates. Tables on “Drug Use Consequences” encompass such issues as the estimated direct costs to society of drug abuse (1992-2000); the estimated indirect costs to society of drug abuse (1992-2000); deaths and death rates for drug-induced causes by sex and race (1979-2000); and specific health, crime, and criminal justice consequences and costs. The tables on “Drug Treatment” focus on number of clients in treatment by facility ownership (1980-2002); number of clients in alcohol and/or drug abuse treatment by age group and type of care; and the estimated number of persons age 12 or older who needed and received substance abuse treatment. Tables on “Drug User Expenditures and Availability” pertain to the supply, purity, price, and accessibility of various illegal drugs. Tables with data on drug use by State, locality, and foreign countries show the breakdown by age, sex, and geographic location. 79 tables
