Abstract
Twenty-three tables provide data on drug use. Data cover the estimated number of users of selected illegal drugs for 1979-2003; trends in the use and harms of drugs among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders; the characteristics of high school students who have used illegal drugs; and drug use among offenders, the homeless, and active-duty military personnel. Fifteen tables provide data on drug-use consequences. This includes the estimated direct cost of drug abuse to society, number of drug-induced deaths, drug-related emergency room episodes, the prevalence of AIDS-infected persons and AIDS-related deaths, drug-related crime, and the monetary value of saving a high-risk youth from drug use. Three tables provide data on drug treatment. Data cover a 1-day census of clients in drug treatment by facility ownership (1980-2004); a 1-day census of clients in alcohol and/or drug treatment by type of care and age group (1987-2004); and the estimated number of persons age 12 or older who needed and received treatment for an illicit drug problem in the past year by demographic characteristics (2002-2003). Eleven tables present data on drug-user expenditures and availability. Among the topics covered are trends in drug expenditures for 1988-2000; trends in the cocaine supply; the average prices and purity of cocaine and crack, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana; the potency of tested cannabis from seizures and eradication samples; drug seizures; and domestic drug consumption. Six tables provide various data on drug use and enforcement by State, and 17 tables present local data on arrestee drug use and drug-related emergency room episodes. Thirteen tables provide international data on alcohol and other drug use in various countries, drug production and supply, and drug law enforcement.
