This report presents information on the use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco among the 209 million members of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population age 12 or older in the United States (referred to as the surveyed population) as of 1994.
Abstract
The report presents data about: (1) the prevalence of the use of specified substances by the surveyed population and by particular age groups; (2) trends in the prevalence of use between 1976 and 1994; (3) the demographic correlates; (4) patterns of drug use, problems arising from this use, and the surveyed population's perceptions concerning the harmfulness of the use; and (5) the prevalence of mental health problems by demographic categories and the association between these problems and levels of substance use among adolescents and adults. The survey finds significant increases between 1993 and 1994 in the lifetime, past-year, and past-month prevalence of marijuana use among persons aged 12-17. It also finds that alcohol was the most commonly used psychoactive drug in the United States in 1994. Notes, tables, figure, appendixes
