This Population Estimates Report from the 1991 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse presents population estimates of drug-use prevalence for the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States.
Abstract
For the 1991 National Household Survey, a national probability sample of households in the United States was selected from 125 primary sampling units. The first chapter of this report presents the survey methodology, procedures for obtaining population estimates, and considerations in interpreting the data. Sample size and U.S. population tables are presented in the second chapter. Chapter three presents prevalence estimates for specific drugs. This chapter is useful when the reader needs estimates of the percentage or number of persons illicitly using drugs in general or a particular drug. Data for each of the drugs surveyed indicate total population by age and sex; whites, Hispanics, and blacks by age and sex; and each region of the Nation by age and sex. The drugs covered in the survey are marijuana, cocaine (including crack), crack, inhalants, hallucinogens, stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, analgesics, alcohol, cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, PCP, heroin, anabolic steroids, and needle use. Chapter four provides data on the frequency of drug use among past-year users. This chapter is useful for those who want some indication of the regularity of drug use. The tables provide the same data as in chapter three for the frequency of marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol use in the past year.
