The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) supports research on the relationship between alcohol and AIDS in three general areas.
Abstract
In September 1988 NIAAA solicited research applications on this subject. The current program focuses on the epidemiology of alcohol use and alcoholism among persons with AIDS, seropositive individuals, and populations at high risk for HIV infection as well as the effect of alcohol on the biological and molecular mechanisms underlying the risk of HIV infection in exposed individuals and the progression to clinical AIDS and related conditions. Other research examines the role of alcohol as a mediator of risk-taking behaviors that are specifically related to unsafe sexual practices and intravenous drug use and the development of preventive strategies to reduce such behaviors.
