This report outlines the 1991 activities of the South African National Institute for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of Offenders (NICRO).
Abstract
The report contains a list of the Board of Sponsors and National Council, messages from the National Chairman and National Director, staff reports, information on fundraising and finances, a financial statement, and lists of 1990/1991 donors and NICRO branches. NICRO continued in 1991 to focus on the problems of growing unemployment and poverty in South Africa. Other issues dealt with by local branches included gangsterism, AIDS prevention and education, community courts, and prisoner abuse. NICRO placed 581 inmates in community service projects and participated in a working group investigating prison overcrowding and alternate sentencing schemes. During 1991, NICRO personnel delivered 264 public addresses, published 156 news articles, made 25 TV appearances, and granted 49 radio interviews.
