This report outlines the 1990 activities of the South African National Institute for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of Offenders (NICRO).
Abstract
NICRO has a commitment to nonracist and nondiscriminatory practices, to cooperation with other community-based and welfare organizations, to involvement in social and human rights issues and legislation, to the investigation and improvement of offenders' rights, to the greater involvement of youth in the organization, and to the implementation of noncustodial punishment. This report contains a list of the Board of Sponsors and National Council, financial statements, a list of donors, and a list of NICRO branches. The programs initiated by NICRO during 1990 included bus services to prisons, Crime Awareness for Schools, and programs on Child Sexual Abuse and Community Services Orders. In response to the issue of financial need, NICRO has developed income-earning, self-help projects and coordinated with other agencies in providing skills training, job creation, and self-sustaining feeding programs. The organization implements a public education campaign through newspaper articles, speeches, radio interviews, and television appearances.
