THIS IS THE THIRD ANNUAL REPORT OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE, WHICH IS THE RESEARCH CENTER OF LEAA AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EVALUATING CRIMINAL JUSTICE PRACTICES AND TRANSLATING THE FINDINGS INTO WORKABLE PROGRAMS.
Abstract
IN ESSAY FORM THIS REPORT DESCRIBES SOME OF THE INSTITUTE'S EFFORTS TO FULFILL ITS CONGRESSIONAL MANDATE -- 'TO ENCOURAGE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO IMPROVE AND STRENGTHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE.' INCLUDED IS A DISCUSSION OF COMMUNITY BASED RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, A DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTATION THAT IS BEING DONE WITH DEFENSIBLE SPACE CONCEPTS, AND A REVIEW OF POLICE OPERATIONS STUDIES. ALSO COVERED ARE THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH TOPICS: STREAMLINING THE COURTS, LEGAL SERVICES FOR THE INDIGENT, RETURNING THE OFFENDER TO SOCIETY, AND COST-EFFECTIVENESS STUDIES.
