This article summarizes the National Juvenile Justice Action Plan: A Comprehensive Response to a Critical Challenges; this comprehensive agenda to reduce youth violence was developed by the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) under the leadership of Attorney General Janet Reno.
Abstract
The Coordinating Council consists of nine juvenile justice practitioners and representatives from the United States Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, Treasury, and Education; the Office of National Drug Control Policy; and the Corporation for National Service. The eight objectives of the action plan include providing immediate intervention and appropriate sanctions and treatment for delinquent juveniles; prosecuting certain serious, violent, and chronic juvenile offenders in criminal court; reducing youth involvement with guns, drugs, and gangs; and providing opportunities for children and youth. The discussion concludes that objectives of the Action Plan and the model established by OJJDP's Comprehensive Strategy can be successfully implemented, but only if a long-term commitment is made to work together to achieve them. 16 references
