A comprehensive assessment of the quality and usefulness of existing national statistics on juvenile victims and juvenile offenders concluded that accurate and adequate information about juveniles for policymaking and research purposes is lacking.
Abstract
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the Bureau of Justice Statistics cooperated to assess data needs and existing statistics and recommended several measures to improve statistics on juveniles and juvenile justice. Recommended measures include developing an ongoing national survey of juvenile offending, considering using the National Crime Survey and other methods to improve data on juvenile victims, and improving data on the responses of the juvenile justice system. Discussion of steps needed to carry out each recommendation and appended lists of study group members, acronyms, and related reports.
