This CD-ROM summarizes information disseminated at the National Leadership Forum XI on December 6-8, 2000 in Washington, DC.
Abstract
One major focus of the conference was Children of Substance Abusers. The results of the Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey of 1992 were presented. Other topics were genetic risk, environmental risk, family influences, non-specific family influences, and programs for children of substance abusers. A matrix model of an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program was discussed along with outpatient recovery issues and relapse factors. The Rave Subculture was described. Resolving conflict in coalitions and building effective teams were discussed. Also discussed was methamphetamine treatment in community-based organizations, funding of treatment programs, the myths of legalization of drugs, and preventing steroids and other drug use. The Weed and Seed Program was summarized for the year 2000. Blueprints for model prevention programs were viewed. Using the Internet to market information and convey messages was one subject. Safe communities and safe schools, as well as working on college campuses, were discussed. Other subjects included drinking and driving, effective advocacy, media campaigns, sports and alcohol marketing, and youth leadership skills and environment. Working with the media was the focus of part of the conference. Points to keep in mind for the source of an interview is that preparation of 3 to 5 points to be made in the interview is the key; deadlines must be honored; and questions should be answered in language the general public would understand.
