Presentations at an Australian conference on crime prevention address the general topics of crime prevention in transition, State perspectives on crime prevention, the role of the community in crime prevention, new directions for police in crime prevention, private industry and crime prevention, future directions in crime prevention, workshops on crime prevention, and local government and crime prevention.
Abstract
Among the topics addressed in considering crime prevention in transition are crime prevention in Australia, developments in crime prevention in New Zealand, whether or not crime prevention leads merely to crime displacement, and making crime prevention relevant to the criminal and social environment. Overviews of crime prevention in Australian States focus on South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. Presentations on the role of the community in crime prevention encompass the problems and pitfalls in crime prevention, networking crime prevention, and the Good Neighborhood Program in Victoria. Two presentations discuss new directions for police in crime prevention, including a description of a police-community crime prevention program. An address on future directions in crime prevention focuses on a national approach to crime prevention. Descriptions of 13 workshops on crime prevention in practice involve State and local crime prevention programs that include problem- oriented policing, school watch, crime mapping, a youth crime prevention program, and a crime prevention plan for a central business district. Three presentations focus on general and crime-specific crime prevention programs launched by local governments. Presentation references and a subject index
