DETAILED DATA IS PRESENTED ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ADULT FELONS WHO WERE COMMITTED TO OR RELEASED FROM STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
THE INFORMATION ON COURT COMMITMENTS IS ORGANIZED BY AGE, LENGTH OF SENTENCE, OFFENSE, RACE AND SEX. CHARACTERISTICS OF DATA ON RELEASES INCLUDE TIME SERVED, LENGTH OF SENTENCE, METHOD OF RELEASE, OFFENSE, RACE, AND SEX. THE DATA REPRESENT ANALYSES AND COMPUTATIONS THAT ARE INTENDED TO PROVIDE A COHERENT, STANDARDIZED PICTURE OF INMATE POPULATIONS FOR THOSE 33 STATES OR INSTITUTIONS THAT RESPONDED. ONLY PRISONERS IN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE COVERED IN THIS REPORT, THEREBY EXCLUDING PRISONERS CONFINED IN COUNTRY OR LOCAL JAILS, WORKHOUSES, WORK CAMPS, JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS, ETC. COVERAGE HAS ALSO BEEN REDUCED BY THE ELIMINATION OF PRISONERS UNDER SENTENCE OF DEATH, PRISONERS WITH INDEFINITE SENTENCES, UNSENTENCED PRISONERS, PRISONERS WHO DIED WHILE SERVING THEIR SENTENCES, JUVENILES CLASSIFIED AS JUVENILE DELINQUENTS OR WAYWARD MINORS, AND PRISONERS WITH SENTENCE LENGTHS OF LESS THAN ONE YEAR. INFORMATION CAN BE USED TO COMPARE A PARTICULAR STATE'S DATA FOR PAST YEARS SINCE PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS CRITERIA ARE ALIKE BUT, CAUTION SHOULD BE APPLIED TO INTERSTATE COMPARISONS DUE TO WIDE DISPARITIES IN CRIMINAL CODES AND IN SENTENCING AND RELEASE POLICIES.
