Finland's National Research Institute of Legal Policy presents summaries of eight research projects it completed in 2011, as well as two reports on Finland's legislative processes.
Abstract
"Victims in the Criminal Process - Vulnerability, Services, and Treatment" analyzes Finland's criminal process from the crime victims' perspective, based on the accounts of those working closely with crime victims. Recommendations pertain to improvement in victim services in Finland's criminal justice system. "Stakeholder Participation in Law-Drafting - Key Interest Groups Perspectives" reports key interest groups' perspectives on their involvement in Finnish Law-drafting processes. "Crimes against Retail and Manufacturing Premises in Finland" presents the findings of a nationally representative survey of crime against retail and manufacturing business premises in Finland. "Poor Quality of Legislative Drafting in the Government's Top Projects" assesses Finland's legislative drafting in eight legislative projects that are part of the legislative plan of the Government Program of Prime Minister Vanhanen's second Cabinet of April 2007. "Court Mediation in Finland" reports on an empirical study of court mediation in the district courts of Finland. "News Media, Crime and Fear of Violence" examines whether and how the new media's crime coverage is linked to fear of violence among the public. "Crime Trends in Finland" addresses crime trends in relation to rapid urbanization in the 1970s, as the large postwar-age reached a crime-intensive age, and during the economic recession in the early 1990s. "Homicide in Finland, The Netherlands, and Sweden" is the first study on the European Homicide Monitor (EHM) Data. Major findings are presented, along with a discussion of the importance of the EHN, key limitations, and suggested improvements. Two papers on Finland's legislative process are entitled "Influencing EU (European Union) Law-Making and Transposition of the EU Directives in Finland" and "The Quality of Law-Drafting from the Viewpoint of Parliament Committees."
