THIS FINAL REPORT OF THE NATIONAL SHERIFF'S INSTITUTE COVERS THE PERIOD FROM OCTOBER 1, 1977 THROUGH DECEMBER 30, 1978. CLASSES AND SEMINARS WERE HELD TO PROVIDE TRAINING FOR SHERIFFS.
Abstract
UNDER AN LEAA GRANT, THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTED THREE 2-WEEK CLASSES FOR 91 FIRST-TERM SHERIFFS, ONE CLASS FOR 17 TENURED SHERIFFS, AND TWO CLASSES FOR 73 UNDERSHERIFFS AND CHIEF DEPUTIES. IN ADDITION, REGIONAL UPDATE SESSIONS LASTING 3 DAYS EACH WERE HELD IN QUANTICO, VA., ST. CHARLES, ILL., DENVER, COLO., SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, AND CINCINNATI, OHIO. IN COOPERATION WITH THE PEACE OFFICER STANDARDS AND TRAINING COMMISSION OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, A 3-DAY MANAGEMENT ORIENTATION SEMINAR WAS CONDUCTED IN DECEMBER 1978 FOR NEWLY-ELECTED SHERIFFS IN CALIFORNIA, AND A 2-DAY SEMINAR ON BUDGETING WAS HELD FOR ALL CALIFORNIA SHERIFFS. A 2-DAY BUDGET SEMINAR WAS HELD FOR ALL SHERIFFS IN COLORADO IN JULY 1978, AND A 1-DAY SEMINAR WAS CONDUCTED FOR 80 INSTITUTE GRADUATES IN CINCINNATI, OHIO, IN JUNE 1978. IN THE COURSE OF THE 15-MONTH GRANT PERIOD, THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTED ALL THREE 2-WEEK MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR NEWLY-ELECTED SHERIFFS THAT WERE IN THE ORIGINAL GRANT PLAN, HELD THE ONE 2-WEEK PROGRAM SCHEDULED FOR TENURED SHERIFFS, AND CONDUCTED TWO 2-WEEK PROGRAMS FOR UNDERSHERIFFS AND CHIEF DEPUTIES WHEN ONLY ONE SUCH CLASS HAD BEEN ORIGINALLY PLANNED. FURTHER, THE INSTITUTE HELD FIVE REGIONAL UPDATE SESSIONS INSTEAD OF THE THREE INITIALLY PLANNED. IT CONDUCTED THE SPECIAL PROGRAMS IN CALIFORNIA AND COLORADO AND PARTICIPATED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A 1-WEEK ORIENTATION PROGRAM FOR NEW YORK SHERIFFS. THE MAJOR PORTION OF THE REPORT CONTAINS INFORMATION ON COURSES AND ON RESPONSES OF PERSONS WHO PARTICIPATED IN TRAINING ACTIVITIES. (AUTHOR'S ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DEP)
