Abstract
THIS IS AN EVALUATION OF THE SECOND YEAR OF THE SHERIFFS INSTITUTE SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL SHERIFFS ASSOCIATION AND CONDUCTED BY THE CENTER FOR ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE GENERAL CONCLUSION OF THE EVALUATION IS THAT THE INSTITUTE OFFERRED A GOOD EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR NEWLY ELECTED SHERIFFS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE NATIONAL SHERIFFS' INSTITUTE IS TO MAKE NEW SHERIFFS BETTER ADMINISTRATORS. THE EVALUATION CONCENTRATES UPON PROGRAMMED INPUTS, IMMEDIATE OUTCOMES, AND POST-PROGRAM EFFECTS AS THEY RELATE TO THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF NSI. THE CONTENT, DURATION, AND SEQUENCING OF THE PROGRAM ELEMENTS IS JUDGED TO BE VERY GOOD, AND THE STYLE AND MODE IN WHICH THE SUBJECT MATTER IS PRESENTED WAS CONSIDERED BY NSI GRADUATES TO BE GENERALLY OF SUPERIOR QUALITY. ON SITE VISITS TO FOUR SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENTS REPRESENTING GRADUATES OF NSI CLASS #7 REVEALED CHANGES AND THE INSTITUTION OF NEW PROCEDURES THAT CAME AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THEIR SHERIFF'S ATTENDING THE TWO WEEK PROGRAM. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE NSI CURRICULUM SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE PRESENTED WITH CURRENT PROGRAM ELEMENTS, BUT WITH FLEXIBILITY TO ALLOW FOR RESPONSIVENESS TO CONTEMPORARY CHANGES IN THE PROBLEMS AND PRIORITIES OF NEWLY ELECTED SHERIFFS....RCB
