This program narrative describes the work carried out for the National Study of Law Enforcement Policies and Practices for Missing Children, and explains why additional funding is needed to complete the analysis and final report.
Abstract
The study consisted of three phases: a national survey of police agencies to determine case characteristics, investigative priorities and procedures, obstacles to investigation, and case outcomes; site visits to 30 cities to interview police and shelter agency personnel about police response and problems in connection with missing children cases; and interviews with parents and guardians and with recovered children to obtain their perspective on police handling of their case. The final report will integrate the results to generate information about police actions, decision making, and outcomes; and to make recommendations for future police policies and practices. The need for additional time and support was caused by a delay in completing the second phase data collection, the need to construct the files necessary for determining sample case outcomes, and by design modifications and delays in connection with the first and second phases. 2 figures and 2 references
