SURVEY OF SECURITY PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED, CONTROLS IMPOSED, AND EFFECTIVENESS OF EFFORTS BY LIBRARY OFFICIALS RESPONDING TO NATIONAL QUESTIONNAIRE.
Abstract
DIRECTORS AND CHIEF LIBRARIANS OF 255 PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN 39 STATES WITH ANNUAL CIRCULATIONS TOTALING MORE THAN 92 MILLION RETURNED THE QUESTIONNAIRE WHICH COVERED 60 INDIVIDUAL ITEMS OF INFORMATION. IN ADDITION TO SUMMARIZING THE RESPONSES, THE STUDY NOTES THAT (1) BOOK THEFT, VANDALISM, AND NON-RETURN OF BOOKS ARE THE TOP 3 SECURITY PROBLEMS, (2) 50 PERCENT OF THE LIBRARIES HAVE MODERATE SECURITY SYSTEMS, 41 PERCENT HAVE LOOSE SECURITY SYSTEMS, AND 9 PERCENT HAVE STRICT SYSTEMS, AND (3) ALMOST HALF OF THE LIBRARIES HAVE NEITHER GUARDS NOR ALARMS. A SAMPLE QUESTIONNAIRE, PLUS STATISTICS OF RESPONSES ARE PROVIDED.
