This report is based on surveys conducted through 1992 from the Monitoring the Future study of American secondary school students and young adults. The survey focused on reporting the prevalence of drug use among these populations and on analyzing trends in substance abuse since the surveys began in 1975.
Abstract
The volume begins with an overview of key findings, which include those from surveys conducted of eighth graders through high school seniors; the results specifically pertaining to younger respondents are contained in a separate volume. These findings emphasize trends in illicit drug use, alcohol use, and cigarette smoking; racial and ethnic comparisons; and drug use in eighth grade. This volume discusses the prevalence of drug use among young adults post-high school, analyzing drug use as a function of age, sex, region, and population density. Trends in drug use are examined, as are attitudes and beliefs held by young people pertaining to the harmfulness of drugs and personal disapproval. The social milieu of young adults is explored in terms of peer norms, exposure to drug use by friends and others, and perceived availability of drugs. Separate chapters discuss the prevalence of drug use and trends in drug use among college students. 27 tables, 48 figures, and chapter references
