This volume contains the proceedings of the National Symposium on Pretrial Services, held in Denver on June 23 to 25, 1980.
Abstract
The Pretrial Services Resource Center sponsored this fourth national conference with funds from LEAA. The program included two major addresses; debates on the major issues of dangers in release decisionmaking, statewide systems of pretrial services, and the future of pretrial services; 25 workshops; four discussion groups; and six professional development seminars. The full texts of the keynote and closing speeches and summaries of other program segments are included here. Changes facing and occurring in the field of pretrial services received special attention. Among these are the shift of funding responsibility from Federal to local government; the increasing acceptance of pretrial services; the probable demise of LEAA as major support; and the possible discontinuation of Federal pretrial agencies. The keynote address focused on trends which might negate a sense of progress in criminal justice reform, and the closing speech called for the continuation of reform efforts and of attempts to educate the public. Photographs are included, and a symposium calendar is appended.
